SLTとは


SLT is the acronym for Situational Language Teaching, a very popular English teaching method invented by British linguists. This method has been used widely in the world for about 80 years since it was invented. Based on the idea, speech was viewed as the basis of language and structure as being at the heart of speaking ability, all the lessons are taught with particular situations. By integrating English and situations, you can enhance your English learning in a most effective way.

5 characteristics of SLT

  • Language learning is habit-formation.⇒Your English skills can only be reflected by your daily English habits.
  • Mistakes are bad and should be avoided, as they make bad habits.⇒Bad habits only interfere with building good daily English habits.
  • Language skills are learned more effectively if they are presented orally first, then in written form.⇒You had better speak English before you write.
  • Analogy is a better foundation for language learning than analysis.⇒It is easier to do something than worry about it.
  • The meanings of words can be learned only in a linguistic and cultural context.⇒You can’t learn how to use it practically unless you use it!

A: What’s going on?
B: Not much.
A: This Friday, I’m throwing a party.
B: Oh really? I didn’t know that.
A: Are you serious?
B: I haven’t heard anything about it.
A: Can you make it?
B: What time does it start?
A:The party starts at 8.
B: Yeah, I think I’ll go.
A: Am I going to see you there?
B: You will.

This passage is pretty simple; probably for intermediate or even pre-intermediate level.

But please stop and ask yourself…

Have I had this level of conversation smoothly with local people?

“I know what it means but I am not sure how to use it…” “I do not use it in an everyday life, so I am not confident…” “When can I use this??” Are you giving up using English with these reasons?? This is why you study English with a particular situation!

The conversation like this example is frequently used by local people, at least once a day, and this is not exaggerated. “Little and often” can only make your English better like a native English speaker!
